THE RECONQUISTA
"Christ is our hope that through this little mountain [the] well-being of Spain and the army of the Gothic people will be restored."
— Pelayo, when offered peace with the enemies of Christ
The year was ~720 AD, and nearly all of Spain had been taken by force. The Muslim forces had successfully pushed back the Christians, who, under the leadership of Pelayo, maintained but one final holdout in the northwestern most tip of Spain. The future looked dim for the bleaguered Kingdom of Asturias.
And yet, the Christians did not give up. One historian put it this way: "all who clung to the hope of a Christian revival" gathered their forces within this final holdout. By the year 1492, over a half century later, they had retaken their entire country for Christ.
This effort is now known as The Reconquista — Spain's reconquest for Christ.
Today, our own country of America dedicates an entire month of its year to idolatry: the notion that identity can be found in sexual expression apart from Christ. Every June, America raises a fist towards Heaven and lays seige to God's moral standard. Those perpetuating this travesty then have the audacity to demand silence from Christians while they groom and mutilate children. But like Pelayo, we reject their demands they dress up in false offers of peace.
And like the Christians of old, we trust God will honor our stand.
